Medicare gives a Detailed Report on Telehealth

Medicare released an important report on the state of telehealth usage within the Medicare patient population across the country. Utilization continues to be low, mainly due to restriction on where the patient can be when accessing telehealth. A patient cannot be in their home or in a non-rural location. The restriction created from this "originating site" rule is preventing the wide spread development and adoption of care delivery models enabled by telehealth for the elderly population. While there is always the risk of telehealth being used for the "worried well," Medicare has an opportunity to shape remote monitoring and telehealth technology to better enable access to expert, quality medical care and lower the cost of care for better outcomes.
